The “Best Person” Pushed the Correct Button
GMA’s statement which asserts that she is the “best person” to lead this nation through the transition to parliamentary form of government is a statement that’s pregnant with meaning. Whatever it is that you feel about her as a leader of this nation, you just can’t ignore the fact that this woman president has the words which other women presidents right now may not have the courage to say.
But just what do GMA’s words mean especially of her claim that she is the “best person”? Her words mean something more than what her detractors had already thought she meant.
She’s the “best person” absolutely. Under the circumstances that surround the current context of Philippine politics, she is the best person because she is the President. No matter how we deny it, she is the acknowledged leader of this nation. She’s calling the shots. She’s in Malacañang. She holds the keys to the coffers of the land. She is the commander in chief of the AFP. She has the numbers and friends in Congress. She runs the country. She has survived impeachment complaints. She lost some allies but still packs many. She has said sorry but still incumbent. She has faced controversies like “Hello Garci” the gutsy way.
Lately, she deciphered a clandestine attempt to unseat her but, wisely, she pressed the button of “state of emergency.” And however negative you may feel about her Proclamation 1017, you have to admit that if you were in her shoes, you would not do any different to show to the nation and to the world that you really are the best person.
But is the best person the right person? Not necessarily and if the “best” is not the “right” then who’s the right one? Is it JdV, Erap, Ferdie, Cory, Noli, Drilon, Pimentel, Miriam, Loren, Susan, Escudero, Imelda, Lito Lapid, Eddie Gil? Admit it, we don’t know. Perhaps GMA doesn’t know either. But goodness, she knows just what to say and do.
