I attended a week-long training on language learning and teaching in Santiago City, Isabela last March 14-22, 2006. It was organized and sponsored by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Regional Office 2. The training was billed as “Project SPELL (Strengthening the Proficiency of English Language Learning): Subcomponent HELPP (Higher Education Language Proficiency Program).” It was held at the High School Department of the University of La Salette.

The training was attended by 33 participants coming from various colleges and universities from regions 1 and 2. The purpose of the training is to create a pool of able and equipped language teachers who will carry on further training of other teachers in their respective regions. The idea is to make many English teachers become proficient in the English language and to equip them with the necessary skills in teaching English as a second language.
