Who Deserves Bigger? King Pacquiao or Prince Hatton?
It’s been a long time since this Postman wrote something about the boxing phenom called Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao. This writer would like to share something about the issue hampering a Pacquiao-Hatton showdown.
The Pound-for-Pound King deserves the respect. I say this not because I am a Pacquiao admirer. There are a couple of posts here where I criticize his performance. I take things logically and fairly and I believe it’s logical and fair for Mega Manny to have the lion’s share of the duel. Here are my bases.
He is King. Doesn’t a king deserve the best? You may say, “not the best in everything” and I go right on with that, but if you include money in the “everything” I say that the king deserves the best especially in that thing. Let’s face it, money is THE THING that makes boxing these days and for the numero uno in the sport, he deserves nothing than the best. “But the king got something lower when he faced Oscar de la Hoya?” Yes, because ODLH is in a bigger arena than the boxing ring. I dare say that he is not yet the king in the arena of boxing promotions; he’s just a prince there. But it’s just right that he got bigger than a king in a smaller kingdom. Oscar is A NAME; Pacquiao is A NAME; but Hatton?
Hatton is just a prince. Though he is a king in the 140-lb division, he is just one of several other kings. He tried to expand his kingdom when he tried his mettle against the ex-p4p king Floyd Mayweather, Jr. but failed miserably. “But at least he lost to the p4p king that time” you may say, and my response is: “Who is Pacquiao now?” Let me answer that. Pacquiao was king in the superflyweight, featherweight, superfeatherweight, and lightweight classes. He experimented in the welterweight and did it well against a former p4p king. He inched his way up the pound-for-pound ladder little by little until he got to the top. Ricky Hatton is not even in the top ten of that ladder right now.
It’s not hard-headedness on his part to insist on a 60-40 split; it’s hardheadedness for those who cry out a 50-50.
